Kindle, or just your phone?
The Kindle app is free, and you already own a phone. So is a Kindle worth buying at all? For books, yes, and here are the four reasons I still reach for mine.
You read books regularly: get a Kindle. The cheapest is AED 329.
You read a few pages a month, or mostly comics and magazines: keep using your phone or iPad.
Four things a Kindle does that a phone cannot
1. It works in the sun
A phone screen washes out outside. My Paperwhite is perfectly readable in direct sun. In the UAE that alone is a reason to own one.
2. It lasts weeks, not hours
I charge my Kindle about once a month. A phone or iPad used for an hour of reading a night still needs charging every day.
3. It is not a screen shining at you
E-ink looks like paper and reflects light instead of beaming it at your eyes. The front light is soft, and on the Paperwhite it turns warm amber at night.
4. Nothing interrupts you
No WhatsApp, no Instagram, no notifications. A Kindle does one thing, and that makes it far easier to read for an hour instead of five minutes.
Where a phone or iPad still wins
- Full-colour comics and magazines. A tablet shows them properly. The Kindle Colorsoft gets closer, but a tablet is still better.
- Reading in bed without a light. Both work, but a phone at night is also a phone full of distractions.
- You already carry it. For five minutes in a queue, the Kindle app on your phone is fine, and it syncs your page with the Kindle.

Is a Kindle better than reading on an iPad?
For reading books, yes: an e-ink screen is readable in direct sun, is not a backlit screen shining at you, lasts weeks on a charge and has no notifications. An iPad is better for comics in full colour, magazines and everything that is not a book.
Can I read Kindle books without a Kindle?
Yes. The free Kindle app on a phone, tablet or computer reads the same books from the same account, and keeps your place in sync with a Kindle if you have one.
How long does a Kindle battery last compared to a phone?
Amazon lists up to 12 weeks for the Paperwhite and 6 weeks for the basic Kindle. I charge my Paperwhite about once a month.
