Paperwhite or basic Kindle?
The basic Kindle has just dropped to AED 329 on Amazon.ae. The Paperwhite is AED 849. Both read exactly the same books, so here is what the extra AED 520 buys.
You read most days: the Paperwhite. Bigger screen, warm light at night, waterproof, and a month between charges for me.
You read now and then: the basic Kindle at AED 329 is the best value it has ever been.

What the extra AED 520 gets you
A bigger screen
Seven inches against six. It sounds small, but it is more words per page and fewer page turns, and it matters more if you read Arabic, where the script is happier with a bit of room.
A warm light
The Paperwhite's light goes from white to amber, which is much easier on the eyes in bed at night. The basic Kindle's light is adjustable in brightness, but stays white.
Waterproofing
Pool, beach, bath. The Paperwhite can take a splash and more. The basic Kindle cannot.
Battery
Amazon says up to 12 weeks against 6. In real life I charge my Paperwhite about once a month.
What I would do: the Paperwhite, again.
I bought mine with my own money about a year ago and I would buy the same one again. My only complaint is storage: 16 GB fills up once your library grows, and then you are deleting books to make room. The basic Kindle has the same 16 GB, so it does not fix that either.
But at AED 329, the basic Kindle is now half its usual price. For someone who reads a few books a year, it is the better buy.
