Kindle Paperwhite battery life, in plain numbers.

Amazon says up to 12 weeks. Here is what that is based on, what it means for how you read, and how the other Kindles compare.

The claim: up to 12 weeks, based on half an hour of reading a day, wireless off, light at setting 13.

In hours: about 42 hours of reading on one charge.

Charging: about 2.5 hours with a 9 W USB-C adapter.

What 12 weeks really means

Battery numbers for e-readers are quoted for a very light reading habit: half an hour a day, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off, and the front light at setting 13. That is where the 12 weeks comes from, and it works out to about 42 hours of reading.

So the honest way to use the number is to think in hours, not weeks:

  • Half an hour a day: about 12 weeks, as quoted.
  • One hour a day: roughly 6 weeks.
  • Two hours a day: roughly 3 weeks.

Those are simple divisions of Amazon's own figure, not new tests, and a brighter light or reading with wireless on will take them down a little. Even at two hours a day it is a once-every-few-weeks charge, which is the real difference from a phone.

How it plays out for me

In real life I charge my Paperwhite about once a month. I read most days, usually for a bit more than half an hour, so that matches the arithmetic above.

Charging

The Paperwhite charges over USB-C. Amazon.ae says about 2.5 hours with a 9 W power adapter, and that the Kindle does not come with one, so use any USB-C phone charger you already have.

It is also waterproof (IPX8), has 16 GB of storage and a 7 inch screen, which is why it is the one I recommend to most people.

Related: Paperwhite or the basic Kindle and is the Colorsoft worth it.

Questions people ask

How long does the Kindle Paperwhite battery last?

Amazon.ae says up to 12 weeks, based on half an hour of reading a day with wireless off and the light at setting 13.

How many hours of reading is 12 weeks?

Half an hour a day for 12 weeks is about 42 hours of reading. Read for two hours a day and the same battery lasts a couple of weeks, not twelve.

How long does the Kindle Paperwhite take to charge?

Amazon.ae says about 2.5 hours with a 9 W USB-C power adapter. It charges over USB-C.

Which Kindle has the best battery life?

On Amazon's figures the Paperwhite and the Paperwhite Signature Edition are both up to 12 weeks, the Colorsoft up to 8 weeks and the basic Kindle up to 6 weeks.

Does turning on the light drain a Kindle faster?

Yes. Amazon's 12 weeks is quoted with the light at 13, so a brighter light or a lot of reading with wireless on will shorten it.
