Most robot vacuum reviews are written for carpeted houses in rainy countries. A UAE apartment is a different job: fine dust every day, hard floors, and a humid summer.
Run it every day, not every week.
Get a station that empties the bin, or you will be emptying it daily.
Vacuum first, mop second, or the dust turns into streaks.
Dry the mop with warm air, or it will smell by July.
Where the dust comes from
The balcony and the front door. Fine sand comes in on shoes and through gaps around sliding doors, especially after a windy day. It collects along the door tracks and in the first metre of floor inside.
The air conditioning. The AC runs most of the year and moves dust around the whole flat. It settles on floors as a thin grey layer you only notice when you wipe a finger across the tiles.
People and pets. Hair, crumbs and the usual. Hair is the thing that wraps around a robot's brush, which is why anti-tangle brushes matter more than suction numbers.
What to look for
A station that empties the bin
The dust bin on the robot itself is small. With daily fine dust it fills fast, and a full bin means weaker suction and a robot that stops mid-run. A self-emptying station sucks the bin out after every run and holds weeks of dust. On the Ecovacs range, every OMNI model has one, and so does the N20e PLUS.
Bags or bagless
Stations either collect dust in a disposable bag or in a bagless container you tip into the bin. Bags are cleaner to empty but you have to keep buying them. Bagless saves the cost and the hunt for the right bag. The N20e PLUS is bagless and holds up to 45 days of dust.
A mop that gets washed, and dried
Tiles and marble show every streak, so mopping matters here more than in carpeted countries. But a wet mop left in a warm flat will smell. Look for a station that washes the mop with hot water and dries it with hot air. All the Ecovacs OMNI stations do, at between 40°C and 63°C depending on the model.
Vacuum before mop
Mopping over loose dust smears it into streaks. Set the robot to vacuum first and mop second, or pick one that does it by itself. The T80 OMNI, for example, vacuums carpets first and has a DeepClean mode with two criss-cross passes.
Door tracks and thresholds
Sliding balcony doors have tracks that trap robots. Most robots cross about 2 cm. The X11 PRO OMNI is rated for 2.4 cm steps and 4 cm sliding-door tracks, which is worth knowing if the balcony is where the sand comes in.
How to set it up
- Schedule one run a day, at a time nobody is home. Short daily runs beat long weekly ones.
- Clean the door tracks yourself once a week. Robots do not get into the groove of a sliding door, and that is where the sand sits.
- Rinse the filter every week or two in dusty months, following the manual for your model, and replace it when it stays grey.
- Clear the floor of cables the first few runs, until the robot has learned the map.
- Top up the clean water tank and empty the dirty one every few days if it mops daily.
